2016 | Resolutions
By lucypho_ 12:00 PM 2016As much as you hear it being said, I truly can't believe that we are now in 2016 and have said goodbye to 2015. Each year seems to pass by faster and faster especially now as I'm getting older. No longer are the days where holidays seem to drag on for forever but now, months just seem to pass me by before I realise it.
Normally, I don't have resolutions for myself just because I don't want to set up myself for the failure or the feeling of failing when I don't achieve the goals that I set out. However, as 2016 rolled in and I started to reflect on this past year, what was accomplished and what wasn't, I discovered that I wanted to make a goal to achieve by the end of 2016. I wanted to make a goal that was achievable but still challenged me to push myself in the upcoming 12 months.
My goal for 2016 is this: Learn 3 things about myself.
It seems so simple but I know how hard it can be for me, especially if I don't go about actively trying to achieve it. I don't think I know everything about me and I don't believe anyone truly knows everything about themselves. You discover new things about yourself when you go through lows and highs of life, when presented with new situations and dilemmas, and when you want to push yourself a little further to achieve a goal that you have set yourself whether that be an assignment, work deadline or some other task. That's the great thing about living, you always have the potential to learn something new about yourself.
However, living can also present the biggest barrier. When you are living in routines, you can become complacent and I somewhat believe that was what I was doing before doing my semester abroad. I didn't really push myself outside of my routine so I don't think I was making the leaps and bounds in self-learning that I could have. And hence why I made this goal for myself. By stating that my goal is to learn 3 things about myself, I am telling myself that I need to push myself, go outside what I am used to, be somewhat daring, live life for the experiences and the opportunities for self-discovery.
These 3 things don't have to be completely new to me, they could be things that have been reinforced during the year. But by the end of 2016, I want to have learnt or rediscovered 3 things about myself. That is my goal and I am determined to achieve it by 31 December 2016.
To anyone who has made their own 2016 resolutions, I wish you good luck in achieving the goals and maintaining your determination for their achievement.
