Show Obsession: Dance Academy ~

By 6:43 PM , ,

Last week, I rediscovered a show and became absolutely obsessed. I am talking absolute fascination. I rewatched every single episode, all behind-the-scene clips, interviews with the cast ... pretty much anything associated with the show in any way. From the title, this show would be 'Dance Academy'. If you haven't heard about it, it's an Australian show that focuses on 6 dances who are enrolled in the National Academy of Dance based in Sydney. The show illustrates the highs and low of a ballet dancer/student who is enrolled in the program and their efforts to win a contract with the Australian Ballet Company.

I became rehooked on the show due to ABC3, the network that airs the show here in Australia, airing a marathon of the second series/season to gain hype for the third series/season that started airing this past week. After watching a couple of episodes during the marathon, I immediately hopped on YouTube where I watched every single episode of the show again. Rewatching the show brought back so many memories that I had when initially watching it, especially during the last couple episodes of the second series/season.

I have no prior experience or knowledge about ballet except that it takes absolute dedication to the form and that ballet dancers work extremely hard. This notion that I had was highlighted in the show and I think the show allows for the general public to really see the work that these dancers place into their art. I have since found out that this show is aired in several different countries including America, on Teen Nick, and Brazil. With that being said, if you watch to check out the show see if any of your local channels air it or just hop onto YouTube and find it there.

Though I do love the show, I have to say that certain parts of the show do make me hit my head on the table. This is usually for the main character Tara, the girl in purple in the above photo. When we meet her in the first season, she goes a bit boy crazy and this really annoyed me to a certain point. Yes, she is a country girl in a now busy city meeting people that she hasn't really had experience with. But with that being said, she tends to take her boy craziness to the next level. However, the show does acknowledge and can sometimes poke fun at it which is a little breather. Every character on the show does play to a certain cliche and I'm fine with that. The show is aimed at a young teenage audience so understand that aspect.

The show does touch upon some bigger issues with one of the main ones being homosexuality. Though I commend them to touching on bigger issues which the show can ignore if they really wanted to, their dealing of the issues can be frustrating. I feel as though they use the homosexuality card when it suits them. If you watch the episodes, you will sort of understand. They make one the characters switch between being a homosexual and heterosexual as it pleases the storyline to a certain extent and that annoys me. I feel as though they are letting the audience's wants dictate the story instead of the writers writing the story as it fits their vision of the character. One of the promotional videos really highlights this frustration for me but I will like to see the actual storyline before completely writing off the writers in this regard.

So, in conclusion, if you are into shows about dancing, or even if you are not,  I would definitely recommend 'Dance Academy'. It's an overall great show to watch.

Just had to sort of get this excitement about the show off my chest. Though it may not show like it in the post, I am really excited for the third series/season and I will really pissed off when I found out that there was only 13 instead of 26 episodes in this season and that they would only be airing it once a week instead of the 5 times a week they had last year.

Until next time, remember to dream big and go after your dreams.
